Today, I bring you a continuation of my discussion on dress socks. If you haven’t already taken a peek at my previous article, “Mens Dress Socks: Finding the Perfect Pair”, then I recommend you start there first before continuing.

After you’ve learnt the basics of dress socks, and you’ve accumulated a decent-sized collection of solid colours, it’s time to start experimenting a little more comprehensively.

Follow these steps to take your footwear to a bolder dimension…

Step One: Exercise caution!

I know you’re excited, but start with subtle patterns and stronger shades to begin with. There’s nothing wrong with taking your time when building your wardrobe up; even the wildest fashionistas in the world rely on their wardrobe essentials from time to time.

Step Two: Match above the leg

Start pairing up your socks with colours that exist above your waistline. For example, if you’re wearing a charcoal suit with a deep red tie, you can introduce a subtle burgundy pinstripe to your charcoal socks.

Step Three: Try some lighter hues

If your sock collection consists of black, navy and charcoal, try to introduce shades of the same colour that are slightly brighter; for example, slate grey and cerulean blue will match a great deal of your wardrobe while remaining quite incongruous.

Step Four: Just go for it!

When you feel confident enough, try wearing a pair of bold vermillion socks with your indigo jeans and brown loafers one weekend outside the formal confines of the office. The strong contrast between blue and red will radiate self-assured poise, whilst the ruddy hue will bring out the orange glow in your tan shoes. See what sort of reaction you get; see if you can slowly transfer the look into your workplace attire.

Do you have a particular favourite pairing you like to rock? Pink socks with white slacks perhaps? Taken an objection to my advice? Then leave a comment below…
