Sometimes, purely by chance, there’s a subject that comes along that hasn’t previously seen any airtime at Guy Style Guide, and it just so happens that today’s post is on the never-before-covered topic of zips.

Here’s a quick Q&A session all about zippers.

Remember, if you have a topic that you’d like to see covered here on Guy Style Guide, just get in touch via the contact page and drop us a line…

It says YKK on my zipper, what’s that all about?

The letters YKK stand for Yoshida Kogyo Company; located in Japan, they just-so-happen to be the world’s top producer of zippers. The world’s largest-smallest branding exercise? Perhaps so…

Help! My zipper’s stuck!

Don’t worry, all you’ll need is a little lubrication and you should be free running again. A little chapstick or petroleum jelly is quite effective in these situations. Failing that, grab yourself a thick 6B pencil (or a stick of graphite if you’re artistically inclined) and rub it along the teeth directly above and below the slide. Using small up and down movements you should be able to get things moving again.

Fabric is caught in my zipper!

Slowly pull the zipper downward taking special care not to damage the fibres of the garment; obviously silk is far more fragile than nylon, so be weary of using too much force with delicate clothing. Be sure to pull any excess fabric out of the way – you don’t want an instant repeat performance, do you?!

Oh no! My zipper has broken entirely!

The best way to deal with a broken zipper, in an emergency, is to use safety pins to close over the gap in the garment. Usually two or three should be sufficient to last you until lunch, so it’s probably wise to keep a couple in your desk draw at work just in case.
