Christmas comes but once a year, yet fashion faux pas live on and on. This yule, don’t let yourself become a style victim…
For the next month I’ll be posting a week by week guide to help you survive the festive period. By following this handy planner, you can be sure you’ll remain the perfectly dressed and groomed gentleman throughout this holiday season.
So without further ado, let’s take a quick look at your first week in the grips of festivities beginning with December the first (which is a Tuesday by the way):
December 1st: Shave off that ‘stache! Your face must be itching like mad after growing all that facial hair during November for prostate cancer awareness. It’s not too late to start growin’ that moustache for charity if you haven’t gotten around to it yet; check out Burton’s specially designed website for more details.
As a luxurious reward for wearing all that itchy hair for a month, I recommend a nice Merkur Heavy Duty razor, Edwin Jagger shaving soap and a badger hair brush from The Traditional Shave Company: think of it as your special pre-xmas gift from you to yourself!
December 2nd: Start to think about your Christmas gifts today rather than desperately pounding the streets on Christmas Eve. You’d be amazed how much more receptive your partner will be to a well considered present, layered with wrapping paper than an air freshener from the local garage!
Most style items make great gifts, just remember to make sure you know someone’s size before hitting the highstreet (more on that next week). If you’re unsure, don’t guess! Nothing says “you’re looking a little husky” more than extra large clothing for a lover that wears a small.
If in doubt, consider accessories. Gloves, umbrellas, scarves, et cetera, are typically one size fits all. Just be sure not to downgrade their look: no tacky ‘Santa Claus’ socks please…
December 3rd: Get out your dancing shoes! Christmas parties should start happening within the next few days, so now it’s time to give your holiday clothing a good airing. If you’re considering wearing an item that’s been crushed away at the back of the closet for the past nine months, take it out and make sure it still fits.
If it does, give it an iron or a quick trip to the dry-cleaners: no-one will appreciate a musty odour emanating from your threads! Don’t forget to pick out something for New Years too!
December 5th: Scarves at the ready. The next few weeks will see you back and forth in all sorts of weather. A great standby for chilly evenings, when you’re caught out by the temperamental weather, is a nice thick merino wool scarf.
Don’t worry if you’re not up to the financial challenge of merino – a good quality cotton will do the job nicely too!
December 6th: Bring out the gloves. You got out your scarf a couple of days ago, but now it’s time to find a pair of toasty, finger-warming gloves. Don’t think you have to spend a fortune to get the best; there are plenty of reasonably priced pairs available at this time of year. Heck, go the extra mile and buy a spare pair for when you inevitably lose them after drinking too much at your next holiday shindig.
December 7th: Write out your Christmas list. Just because you know what you like to wear, doesn’t mean that your family or friends do! If you don’t want to seem too pushy, why not subtly drop hints like circling your favourite items in the Christmas catalogues or bookmarking some top designer gear at your favourite online stores.
