Let’s kick off the run down to Christmas with another Q&A Quickie. This time, the source of woe comes from a certain someone who’d prefer to stay anonymous, but is happy to share the solution to his woe:
“When I roll up my sleeves they always comes [sic] undone. Why? … Can you buy products to stop it?”
Well, worry no more, because the answer is a relatively simple one. The problem you’re having is extremely common; most guys simply pull up their sleeves, scrunching the fabric around their lower bicep.
This is wrong for two reasons. Firstly, it puts unnecessary stretch and strain on the fibers you are crushing up – a sleeve isn’t supposed to sit that far up the arm. Secondly, there’s nothing for the cuff to sit against – this is why you get the slow unravel over the course of the day, requiring constant pushing and sliding to keep your finest sweaters and shirts in place.
To stop this, don’t roll or push the sleeve – instead, fold the sleeve up. Remember to undo the cuff buttons and fold evenly the width of the cuff itself to prevent any warping or distortion. Do this for the length of the lower arm so it will sit snugly on the bottom of the upper arm: any lower looks untidy, any higher says, ‘I forgot my short sleeve shirt this morning’. Try to keep the folds relatively tight as you ascend the arm; if they’re too slack they’ll look untidy and begin to unfurl prematurely.
You’ll find you require no grips or slips to keep your shirts or pullovers in place with this method, though you’ll definitely need an iron to de-wrinkle your precision creases.
